What Happens During A Fertility Awareness Appointment?

An hour is reserved for your Fertility Awareness Appointment.

To make the most of your appointment – it is recommended that you gather all your previous pathology result, medical scans and other tests, which you may have had and forward them to the clinic via email or mail.

Your naturopath will look through this information before your appointment to save you time.

The aim of the Fertility Awareness Appointment is to help you achieve conception faster by identifying when in your cycle you can fall pregnant.

During the fertility awareness appointment, we go into detail about when to try to conceive for each individual woman in her particular cycle pattern. We will also go through the different ways to track and interpret your cycle e.g. temperature and mucous observations, home ovulation kits (testing for a rise in LH), saliva testing such as Maybe Baby.

Home ovulation prediction kits can be useful for many women, but not for all. For instance, women with PCOS may have elevated LH (luteinising hormone) throughout their cycle and hence testing for a rise in LH (on the stick) could be a waste of time and money.

We will also consider other options to evaluate if and when you are ovulating. This is very important as a woman is only fertile a few days every cycle, so to know when you are ovulating is critical when you are trying to conceive.

If you suffer from very irregular cycles, very short or very long cycles – we recommend that you book a Fertility Naturopath appointment to look at any underlying contributing factors.

You will also have time to ask questions and bring up any concerns which you may have.

Do You Know When You Ovulate?

Most women with regular cycles will ovulate 14 days before the 1st day of her period, but this is not always the case. Some women will consistently ovulate early (before day 12) or late (after day 17) months after months.

Some cycles are anovulatory, meaning that no ovulation has taken place, and some women have very irregular cycles which makes it difficult to predict when ovulation will occur.

Further Testing

For some couples further diagnostic procedures such as physical exams e.g. an ultrasound or laparoscopy is helpful.

Blood and urine analysis may be required in order to establish any underlying factors of infertility. This can be done through your GP, fertility clinic or functional pathology. Test which are done through a GP are generally covered by Medicare.

Depending on your circumstance, sometimes a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) can be useful. If you are in contact with chemicals, the chances are that they can impact on your fertility. A Hair Mineral Analysis can help show if any toxic heavy metals are stored in your body impeding your fertility.

For couples who have been long-term vegans or vegetarians, a HTMA can also provide helpful information regarding your levels of nutrients important for conception and pregnancy.

For Many Women - It Is All About Egg Quality

For women over 35 with poor egg quality or low ovarian reserve (numbers of eggs left), it takes time to fully improve your fertility. In these cases, FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) is often high and you may have low AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone). The egg takes about 100 to mature before ovulation and sperm take about 80 days.

If you have severe fertility issues, you may have to be patient and wait for at least 3-4 months before your fertility show signs of improvement. This is of specific relevance before fresh egg collection during an IVF cycle, when you will want to collect the best possible quality eggs.

We find our recommendations are maintainable when they fit in with your lifestyle, budget, time. We take all these factors into account when developing a practical action plan with you.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the
clinic.

What Is The Fertile Window?

The aim of the Fertility Awareness Appointment is to help you achieve conception faster by identifying when in your cycle you can fall pregnant. The appointment is conducted by our Fertility Naturopath.

Under the best of circumstances –there is only a few days each months when a woman can conceive. It is therefore crucial to focus your baby making attempts to this time of your cycle.

For instance the quality of a man’s sperm can greatly reduced if exposed to oxidation, however this can be reversed during preconception care, when exposure is removed and antioxidants and other supplements are introduced.

By now we all know that fertility declines with age and this is the case for both men and women. Below is a table which shows the chances for conceiving in any given month depending on your age.
